Greg Abbott, 64, is a former state attorney general and a Texas Supreme Court judge.
About 150 Abbott supporters gathered at the city's historic Quinta Mazatlán MacEllena
Abbott credits the Rio Grande Valley for helping ensure his win
Along with his wife and daughter, the governor congratulated other Republicans who won or were hoping to win Tuesday night in Texas.
"Tonight, Texans sent a really great message," Greg Abbott said.
"They want to keep Texas the beacon of opportunity that we've provided over the past eight years."
Abbott largely ignored those issues as he campaigned more on the economy, borders and public safety.
