Columbus Day is not one of the major holidays and more retailers are open but some businesses give employees the day off

The day of Columbus Day is certainly not a holiday without controversy.

Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October to commemorate the anniversary of the appearance of Christopher Columbus in America.

It became a joint holiday beginning in 1971. Which happened on October 12, 1492.

Christopher Columbus was less of a hero in history and more of an antagonist in fact

It is not recognized on the United States, but it is an office holiday in 10 states and several cities that prefer not to honor Columbus Day.

Government offices will also be closed on Columbus Day, but when visiting a city, things get a little unclear.

Chicago City offices are closed on Columbus Day but Delaware will remain open.
