His son Calvin O. Butts IV, said the cause of his death was pancreatic cancer.

Eric Adams said in a statement on Friday, "Butts guiding them through some of the city's toughest moments, the city has lost a real giant."

Butts was born in Bridgeport, Conn, on July 19, 1949, to working-class parents.
